NYRF “Ready to Ride?” – Making Youth Motorcycle Safety Education Easier to Deliver

About the National Young Rider Forum

The National Young Rider Forum (NYRF) supports young motorcyclists aged 16–24 who ride mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles up to 125cc. Although young riders account for less than 1% of road traffic and miles travelled, they are over-represented in killed and seriously injured statistics.

For many young people, motorcycling provides essential access to opportunity at a time when learning to drive and owning a car may be financially out of reach. A motorcycle can enable independence, access to education and apprenticeships, employment, sport, and social life — all without reliance on others for transport.

NYRF exists to help young riders make safer choices as they begin their journey as motorised road users. Reaching this audience can be challenging, so NYRF works across schools, colleges, training providers, local road safety partnerships, emergency services, the retail sector, the gig economy, and rider charities to deliver impactful, relevant education.

Ultimately, NYRF’s goal is to reduce the number of young motorcyclists who are killed or seriously injured, by improving knowledge, skills, and awareness across areas such as rider experience, personal protective equipment, motorcycle maintenance, and Highway Code compliance.

Project Overview

The “Ready to Ride?” educational film was developed for use in schools and colleges and designed to fit within a one-hour learning session. At 44 minutes long, however, presenters found it difficult to deliver effectively in a single sitting.

NYRF wanted to increase uptake and usability by breaking the film into shorter, clearly defined sections that could be used flexibly within face-to-face education sessions. The challenge was to achieve this without the ability to re-film or record new linking material.

The Challenge

The film needed to be divided into meaningful, topic-based segments while maintaining a professional look and smooth narrative flow. Each segment had to work as a stand-alone teaching resource that road safety professionals could confidently pick up and use in schools or colleges.

Crucially, the edits needed to feel intentional and seamless, not jumpy or disconnected, despite being created entirely from existing footage.

The Solution

Esitu has previously worked with NYRF on rider-focused behavioural interventions, including a motorcycle hazard perception test developed to support young riders’ safety skills. This shared background provided a strong foundation for the film restructuring project.

Esitu supported NYRF by restructuring the film into logical, user-friendly sections using high-quality editing and clear visual signposting. The work was delivered on time, with regular review points built in so NYRF could provide feedback at key stages.

The result was a set of concise, professionally presented film segments that preserved the integrity of the original content while making it far easier to deliver in real-world educational settings.

The Results

  • The original film was successfully divided into short, flexible segments
  • Each segment includes a clear introduction and end slide, signposting viewers to NYRF
  • Edits are seamless, with strong narrative flow throughout
  • Road safety professionals can now select and deliver individual sections as needed
  • NYRF is able to re-launch the film in a more accessible format, supporting wider uptake and greater educational impact

What NYRF Said

“We enjoyed working with Esitu and felt the team took the time to understand the young riders we are trying to help — and that really showed in how the film was handled.”

“We felt listened to throughout the process and had a strong communication link with the team, allowing us to give feedback and shape the final result.”

“The work was delivered promptly, with great attention to detail, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble.”

What’s Next

NYRF plans to continue using the restructured “Ready to Ride?” film across education settings and will explore further opportunities to collaborate in future projects.
